Can Things Be Pretty AND Environmentally-Conscious?

You may have heard (because we may have been SQUEALING and SHOUTING about it) that we recently opened our flagship TWOOBS store in Byron Bay (sidebar: wooooooop!).

Now, this ain’t our first Rodeo - we’ve actually had pop ups a number of times around Melbourne… but this is our first one since the environment has been sitting at the heart of our brand (and where better to put it than the Australian capital of tofu, green smoothies, and all things save the planet?!).

One thing that’s never changed about our brand is that we like things to be “aesthetic” as they say (or aesthetically pleasing if you’re a stickler for grammar like Troye Sivan and us) so when it came to doing pop ups in the past - it was go big or go home. We’ve converted a shipping container into a shopping wonderland, we’ve had a whole store decked head to toe in pink before millennials made it cool (okay we’ve had two of those), and we’ve turned a 100 square metre space into a giant walk-in wardrobe.

And while these stores we created always had big impact, they also always led to one thing: big waste. Spoiler alert: this is the part where we completely spill on all the terrible things we’ve done for the environment in the past.

Over the years most of our shop fittings have been bought from K-mart. One time we turned a store into an indoor garden out of rolls of plastic grass. We’ve even fashioned a photo wall out of sheets of metallic plastic (we’re talking, like, 100 sheets). Basically, we’ve decked out entire stores out of brand new things, only to dispose of them 6 weeks later.

So when it came to wanting to open a store in Byron, the big question was - could we actually make this work? Could we create a space that was beautifully on-brand, while also holding the environmental ethos that is so important to us?

Enter our superstar design duo: Luchi and Jordi, aka Avant Mater. With a history of working in sustainable design, these two have completely amazed us as they’ve managed to pull together a store that not only is the prettiest dang store we’ve ever set TWOOB in, it’s also been fashioned out of some of the most sustainably-focused dang materials we could’ve found.

It also utilises the ‘OO’ from TWOOBS as a reference to the circular economy, with wonderfully curved shapes throughout the store. And did we mention it’s the colour of sunshine?!

While the space is so lush you’ll have to travel to Byron to see it for yourself, you only have to travel a line further down this page to get the deets on who we worked with to pull the place together, because we want to spread the word on where to get better materials near and far.

Walls: 100% recycled plastics by DEFY.

Seating: 100% recycled plastics by DEFY.

Counter: Post-consumer PET beverage bottles, recycled paper and cardboard.

Curtain: Upcycled hotel towels from Wost Manted (and shout out to our friend Lou at Lou’s Sewing Studio for sewing it together).

And really, this store has shown us that it is indeed possible to make things pretty without betraying our number one gal pal mama Earth.

So tell us - when are you planning your trip to Byron for?!
